Optics

Here's a simple rule.  Optics are always going to be "expensive'.  I like EOTech for the clear ease of target acquisition.  IMHO, EOTechs allow me to point and shoot with a very high degree of accuracy.

At 25 yards with the HK416 22LR, I can cut out the center of the target with ease.  At 50 yards, I can consistently group them within 3" of the center.  I'll post targets at both distances as well as 100 yards with various types of ammo (as soon as I find time to hit the range).

Anyway, I find a good rule of thumb is to pick a number in your head (that your wallet allows) and stick with it.  Don't go on-line and start looking around for stuff that would break the bank.

Also choose one that you'll keep for the life of the rifle.  If I ever sell the HK, I'm not likely to get rid of the EOTech XPS, unless something comes along that I want better.  You can always migrate the optic to another rifle.

The choice for the EOTech XPS2-0 is overkill for a 22lr.  I will say it was relatively easy to sight it in, BUT the elevation is reversed on the EOTech.  You have to pay attention to this else you wonder why its going the other way. ;)

It mounts rock solid on the HK.  No wiggle and a return to zero every time I take it off for rifle cleaning.

Pros:
  • Extremely easy to acquire target
  • Shorter overall length than other EOTech sights leaving more room on the rail
  • Accurate
  • Great return to zero
  • Built to withstand combat conditions

Cons:
  • Expensive.  Amazon was the cheapest.  Keep an eye on it there.  I got mine for $369 shipped!
  • Can't change recticle type.  Its single dot

Summary:

Overall, UBER happy with the sight.  EOTech has great performance even on a 22lr.  Looks great on the rifle and allows me to hit whatever I point at.

One last note about EOTech is their customer service.  I have an older 557/223 for my AR and it had an issue where the hologram wasn't centered in the sight.  I called them up and they took care of it under warrant for free even after 2 years!  Shipped it to them fast and had it back within a week.  Customer service is important for stuff like this since it costs so much.  Try that with an Apple product.  Steve Jobs would ass fuck you for $.01.

Next Up:  Vortex Strike Force Red - Dot (economy sight at only $133.33)

Rattle Can - HK 416

Rainy Saturday so I decided to paint my HK416 using Krylon Ultra Flat Camo paints.  I used to Duracoat and Cerakote everything the color I wanted but I decided that that was overkill.  All you really need is just a rattle can.  The Duracoat/Cerakote finish is durable but what I don't like is the process where some of the "painters" for Cerakote remove your anodizing so it "sticks" better.  The anodizing is for hardness and protection. Cerakote doesn't have the same hardness - SO STOP CERAKOTING everything and allowing these guys to strip off your protective finish.  Simply spray over it if anything - that what I do when I apply it at home. What else are you supposed to do on a rainy day weekend?
