Most people think that there's little difference between a 22LR and a 223/5.56 round. Caliber is almost the same that's why you can get a 22LR conversion kit and drop it into any AR15/M16/M4. It works and works pretty good.
Here's a little table that demonstrates the difference between the two in terms of velocity (average muzzle), mass and Energy (Joules).
Velocity ft/sec | Weight (g) | Energy (J) | |
22LR High Velocity | 1,328 | 36 | 159 |
5.56x45 SS109 | 3,035 | 55 | 1,435 |
The 223/5.56 round has 9X or 900% more energy than a 22LR. That's a huge difference.
For me shooting paper targets at the range using 223/5.56 is just throwing money away. Its almost $.25 ever time you pull the trigger.
